Scott Lynch (born April 2, 1978, in Saint Paul, Minnesota) is a critically acclaimed American fantasy author best known for The Gentleman Bastard series—a blend of high fantasy, crime caper, and dark humor. His breakout debut, The Lies of Locke Lamora (2006), introduced readers to a richly detailed Venetian-inspired world of thieves, con artists, and political intrigue.

The novel follows Locke Lamora and his band of Gentleman Bastards as they pull off elaborate heists in the corrupt city of Camorr. With razor-sharp dialogue, intricate plotting, and emotional depth, the book became an instant favorite among fantasy readers and earned Lynch nominations for the World Fantasy, British Fantasy, and Locus Awards.

The series continued with Red Seas Under Red Skies (2007) and The Republic of Thieves (2013), expanding both the lore and the emotional complexity of its central characters. The long-anticipated fourth installment, The Thorn of Emberlain, is in progress, with Lynch regularly updating fans via social media and newsletters.

Before becoming a full-time writer, Lynch worked in a variety of jobs—including dishwasher, web designer, and volunteer firefighter. His working-class background and love for elaborate world-building influence his fiction, which often examines class structures, loyalty, and survival through the lens of fast-paced adventure.

Lynch is also known for his wit and candor in public appearances, often appearing at conventions and on panels. He lives in Massachusetts with his partner, fantasy author Elizabeth Bear.
