Craig W. Stanfill

Craig W. Stanfill is an American computer scientist, entrepreneur, and author renowned for his speculative dystopian fiction about artificial intelligence. Born in Michigan, he earned his B.S. in Mathematics with Honors at Michigan State University and completed his Ph.D. in AI at the University of Maryland in 1983. Stanfill has authored over 80 patents, co-founded the influential enterprise software firm Ab Initio Software in 1994, and contributed to pioneering AI research at Thinking Machines Corporation alongside notable innovators such as David Waltz and Brewster Kahle.

Stanfill’s acclaimed AI Dystopia series began with Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice, set 250 years in the future in a world dominated by powerful AI corporations controlling every aspect of human life. The book was recognized by BookTrib for its chilling vision, evoking parallels with dystopian classics like Orwell's 1984 and Huxley's Brave New World. Its sequel, The Prophecy of the Heron, delves deeper into themes of exile, forbidden love, identity, virtual reality, and resistance, praised by Kirkus and Chanticleer for its immersive storytelling and sociopolitical commentary.

Outside of literature and technology, Stanfill is passionate about aviation, cycling, sailing, and medieval and Renaissance re-creation. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife and son, both of whom share his enthusiasm for technology.
